About Veterinary Specialist Services, PC

The underlying philosophy of Veterinary Specialist Services is, "Always do your best in the best interest of the patient."

This philosophy has its roots in the observation that despite the founding of the American College of Veterinary Anesthesiologists (later to become the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia) over 30 years ago, anesthetic care in practice has not kept pace with the advances in surgery, medicine and other specialty areas. This is reflected in the fact that despite the availability of similar drugs, monitoring techniques, and perioperative care, anesthetic mortality is approximately 10-100 times higher in veterinary patients than for humans. While differences exist between species that may never allow for the same mobility and mortality rates, striving to improve veterinary anesthetic care and reducing morbidity and mortality is an achievable goal.

The relative inaccessibility of boarded veterinary anesthesiologists to private practices has been one impediment to the improvement of anesthetic care in veterinary medicine. While commonplace in academic teaching hospitals, until recently anesthesiologists have not been readily available in the private practice environment.

Veterinary Specialist Services was founded by Kurt Grimm, DVM, MS, PhD to help veterinarians provide the best in anesthetic care and pain management. Dr. Grimm is double boarded in Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia and Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology and brings his experience as a Professor of Anesthesiology and Pain Management at the University of Illinois into private practice. Dr. Grimm, along with Dr. William Tranquilli, was a founding member of the University of Illinois' Veterinary Interdisciplinary Pain Service and has co-authored the popular Pain Management for the Small Animal Practitioner and is co-editor of the the new 2nd Edition of the Essentials of Small Animal Anesthesia and Analgesia. Dr. Grimm's latest project is lead editor of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia, the 5th Edition of Lumb and Jones scheduled for publication in early 2015.
